Pale purplish-red, quickly degenerating when removed from the water and becoming distinctly orange; fronds bushy, with a cylindrical axis to1 mm wide and 200 mm long. Both phases readily reproduce vegetatively. Photographs by  M.D. GuiryPlants baloon-like when young, becoming contorted and collapsed with age, brown when young to yellow-brown when older, to 250 mm. Generally growing epiphytically on Corallina officinalis and other algae, and on mussels and oysters. Photographs by  M.D. Guiry
